A weekend on the farmWhen I started my PhD more than 2 years ago I met a girl who grew up only 40km away from my home town. Since then my circle of (German) friends grew continuously, through her I got to know another friend and another and another... Amongst all these Germans that I know in Perth there is also a elderly couple originally from
Dresden. This weekend they invited us to stay together with 2 other couples at their farm down south.

While driving down south inlands I was pretty amazed by the country side. I didn't expect all these rolling green hills and forests - a very scenic drive. They built their little farm house quite high up to enjoy the view, a view which makes you feel like there is nothing else around. You can't see any roads or cars not even other houses - just trees and rolling countryside - very beautiful.

When we arrived a glass of red wine awaited us already and this ritual wouldn't stop until we left ;-) All the wines we drank on the weekend came from vines that grow just in front of their house. Our friends own a little vineyard with about 1600 grapevines - just for their private consumption ;-) They are probably also the only ones growing
Scheurebe in Australia - a very lovely white wine. But we didn't just consume the wine we also helped (indirectly) with it's production.

It is winter right now and so the grapevines needed to be pruned. I was a bit surprised how radically they were cut but I was told that vines are quite tough and that they can handle this.

One of the best things about staying on the farm was the food. We had home made German!!! meals each day. It would start with a traditional German breakfast with rolls, boiled eggs and home made jam, followed by morning tea, then a cold lunch with German bread, cold meat and liverwurst, followed by freshly baked cake to have with afternoon tea and a big warm home cooked dinner - it was fantastic!! I can't remember the last time I had 5 meals in one day - prepared for me! Yeah, some times I miss living at home ;-)
We had a great weekend - eating, drinking, talking, planting trees, pruning vines. In fact Ian was surprised about how much our hosts knew about Western Australian history. We had some very interesting talks and really enjoyed ourselves.
